A New Chapter for Hoke County: Hoke High School Opens Its Doors to the Future
RAEFORD, N.C. — After years of planning, preparation and construction, a vision for the future of Hoke County students became a reality on August 6, 2026, as community leaders, educators, school officials and residents gathered for the official ribbon cutting of the new Hoke County High School.
For many in the community, it represented progress, opportunity and a commitment to providing Hoke County’s young people with an educational environment designed to prepare them for the future.
The excitement surrounding the ceremony was evident as local leaders and residents gathered to celebrate the milestone. Hoke County 
Board of Education Chair Ruben Castellon described the occasion as an “awesome day,” while board member Jessica Brown noted the remarkable level of community support.
“It was day and night,” Castellon said, describing the transformation of the campus and the new facility. Brown added that the ceremony brought together people from different generations and backgrounds who shared a common sense of pride in seeing the new Hoke High become a reality.
A School Designed for Today’s Students—and Tomorrow’s Opportunities
Located on the existing Hoke County High School campus at 505 S. Bethel Road, the new facility was created with a student-centered approach. Hoke County Schools describes the project as a major investment in the educational future of the community.
The new school is approximately 139,000 square feet and includes a gymnasium with seating for approximately 1,750 people. The 
facility was designed to provide modern learning spaces while supporting changing educational needs, technology and curriculum.
Among the planned features are science and engineering laboratories, collaborative learning areas, a media space, cafeteria and kitchen facilities, classrooms, offices and athletic facilities.
The school was also designed to improve the overall learning environment by bringing students and staff into a modern facility with updated infrastructure, technology and safety features. Earlier plans for the project emphasized the importance of creating a flexible environment that could adapt as technology and educational practices continue to change.
From Vision to Reality
The journey to the new high school began years before the ribbon was cut.
The project grew from the need to address aging facilities, overcrowding and the changing needs of Hoke County’s growing student population. Planning for the project began in 2022, with the original vision calling for a modern replacement facility that could provide students with improved educational, athletic and support spaces.
The project received significant financial support through the state’s Needs-Based Public School Capital Fund, with Hoke County Commissioners also contributing to the project. The projected project cost is approximately $78.4 million, making it one of the county’s most significant public investments in education.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on February 9, 2024, officially marking the beginning of construction. School and district leaders, construction representatives and local and state dignitaries gathered to celebrate the start of what would become a transformational project for Hoke County.
More Than Bricks and Mortar
While the impressive size and modern appearance of the building are easy to see, school leaders and community members recognize that the real value of the project extends beyond the physical structure.
A new school provides an opportunity to create an environment where students can learn, collaborate, explore careers and develop skills needed for college, technical education, military service or the workforce.
The science and engineering laboratories and collaborative spaces, for example, reflect the growing importance of hands-on learning and 
career preparation. Modern classrooms and technology infrastructure provide teachers with additional tools to engage students and support different learning styles.
The facility also provides spaces where students can gather for athletic events, performances, activities and other experiences that help create the traditions and memories associated with high school.
For generations of Hoke County families, the high school has represented more than a place where students attend classes. It is a gathering place, a source of community pride and an important part of the county’s identity.
The new facility carries that tradition forward while creating a new setting for the next generation.
Community Pride on Display
Perhaps one of the most meaningful aspects of the ribbon-cutting celebration was the response from the community.
Board member Catherine Blue described the new school as beautiful and expressed excitement about welcoming students into the facility.
That excitement reflects the larger community investment behind the project. A school of this size and importance touches virtually every part of Hoke County—from families and educators to local businesses, taxpayers and community organizations.
The project also represents the work of many people who may never have their names attached to the building. Architects, engineers, construction workers, school personnel, administrators, elected officials and community leaders all played roles in bringing the vision to life.
The ribbon cutting offered an opportunity to recognize that collective effort.
Looking Ahead
While the ribbon cutting officially opened the new building, the transformation of the Hoke High campus is not yet complete.
The next phase of the project includes demolition of the former high school building as well as construction of tennis courts, a bus lot and additional parking. That work is expected to continue into May 2027.
Inside the new building, furniture, instructional materials and technology are being installed as the school prepares for students and staff. School officials have worked to complete the final steps necessary to make the facility ready for the new school year.
According to the current Hoke County High School calendar, the first day of school is scheduled for August 24, 2026—putting students at the center of this new chapter almost immediately after the ribbon-cutting celebration.
A Legacy Begins
Every new school eventually becomes more than concrete, steel, classrooms and hallways. It becomes the place where students make lifelong friendships, teachers inspire future careers, teams build traditions and families celebrate milestones.
For Hoke County, the new high school now has the opportunity to become that place.
The August 6 ribbon cutting was therefore not simply the conclusion of a construction project. It was the beginning of a new story.
A new generation of Hoke County students will walk through its doors. They will learn in its classrooms, compete in its athletic spaces, explore new interests, discover their talents and create memories that may last a lifetime.
The building may be new, but the mission remains familiar: to educate, inspire and prepare Hoke County’s young people for whatever comes next.
As the community looks toward the future, the new Hoke County High School stands as a visible reminder of what can happen when a community invests in its children.
The ribbon has been cut.
Now, a new chapter begins.
